different hoses
ilpatino
Hi all,

There are all kind of different hoses present under the hood.

When working on #1452 yesterday, I noticed that a lot of the hoses were in pretty bad shape. Although they aren't easibly accesible, I am planning to replace almost all of the hoses and rubber "bridges" (e.g. the ones from the throttle housing).

Now, does anybody have some sort of list af all the different sizes and lengths of hoses and rubber joints?

Thanx!

Gunter

I'm happy to help and can probably provide you with what you want, but not tonight. It will take a bit of time.

No hurry Art, much appreciated your help! Concerning winter/summer, #1452 will hibernate for the time being. I'll pay her a visit once in a while, but due to salt on the roads here, she won't be able to come out for a few months I guess.

I do hope I don't pull a heap of rubbish out of the garage come next spring. [B)]

I would encourage you to stay with original Mercedes branded hose. This is fantastic stuff.

In all cases, the critical dimension is the inside diameter. For example, if the hose fits over a 12 mm pipe then the hose ID needs to be 12 mm. In this particular example, the original hose would have had an outside diameter of 19 mm and a length appropriate for the application.

The problem is that Mercedes "standard" hose (N900271) has all grown by 2 mm on the outside diameter. What was origially 12x19 is now 12x21. This, by itself, isn't a problem but it interferes with the re-use of the original hose clamps since most are size specific. 19 mm hose clamps don't fit on 21 mm hose.

If some of your original clamps have already been replaced then the concern for originality is not there so much. On the other hand, you can also buy modern size-specific clamps that will at least keep the appearance of the car close to correct and then store away the original clamps.

If you aren't constantly impressed with your car, then it needs fixing.

Hi Chris, Art,

it's simple, as it used to be the crede at Mercedes, function over form. If the best material doesn't look the part, I don't care.

The problem is, there are so many little tubes here and there, I just don't know where to start. For example, the water-hoses on the throttle housing need replacing. When taking the housing of, they disintegrated. I made a temporary solution with some garden-hose, just to get it from the garage and back to home, but that gardenhose WILL have to be replaced if I'm going to take it out for longer drives. Also, further down I saw a similar hose that will have to be replaced as well.

So the info I'm looking for is; how many different sizes of water hose, I'll cut them at length myself, how many of them "pre-bent." What about fuel-hoses. Although they seem in pretty good shape, although I haven't made an inventory yet.

The plan is to get al the various hoses so I can replace them when I've got the time, rather than ordering them one piece at a time.

I know I'm hugely profiting from the vast amount of experience you guys have. [:I] Imagine doing something like buying and renovating a 6.3 some 20 years ago without the advantages of the internet. I would have ruined it (and myself) by now.[}:)][}:)]

You are lucky, you should be able to buy Metric hose where you are but try explaining metric sizing to the dills in the parts places here. It's all Chinese made hose in Imperial sizes.

As you are in Europe, I guess you will deal with the Classic Center there or the dealer. If you have trouble, get back to us, because we can get upgraded numbers from Tom Hanson at the USA Classic Center of from our own records.

Some of the high pressure lines can be rebuilt reusing the end pieces. The oil line to the air compressor and the return fuel line hose are the most important if they have not been replaced already.

Hello Gunter,
I went through this (and a lot more) before I got 5327 where he is now! I really dont want to disillusion you but...it starts only with the hoses....esp. when your requirements are like yours are(and mine as well!!).
At one time you have to decide whether you cross the border...or not which you did when you bought the car....
You have to face the fact that -regrettably- it wont make -sense- (as the countervalue you create does not increase in the same amount as your investment in money and time). But your heart will jump!![:D]
I would assume that I have leavings of all needed sizes from my resto as I replaced them ALL (as well as almost ALL rubber parts)...plan your trip for the spring!![;)]

Gunter,
When I have some time, I'll try to upgrade some of those part numbers to current from what I know. That is a sort of preliminary list to use as a basis that I had time to do today. Oliver is right about ending up with a lot of left over hose - you have to buy a metre to use about 10 cm in a lot of cases. It makes sense to share with someone if you live close enough. You will also note that the hose part numbers often include the inside diameter of the hose in mm as part of the number and the some of the clamp numbers include a similar figure. So, in some cases, where you have bought hose for another reason, you can use it elsewhere. The important thing is to ensure that it is the correct type of hose for the job.
Art
ilpatino
Hi oliver, well it is a labour of love. [^]

Regarding the left-overs from your tube-renovations (is that a correct word[?]), I won't mind to pay for shipping-costs if you send some parts in a cardboard box. That should still be cheaper than ordering them from MB directly. Maybe you can include the time-relay for the interior lighting (if it works [:D]) and if you have one, the switch for the glove-box-lighting which I ruined trying to get the ashtrayhousing out. [:(!][xx(]

I did set myself a monthly financial barrier though, 'cause cotst could get out of proportions really quickly I already understand.

The aim for me is to create a technically dependable motor and drive-train. I like the "patinated" look, so I'm not after some-sort of show stopper.

But I do have to keep my mind focussed, because when you stand at the bottom of a hill, it may seem very high up, but when you take it one step at a time, you eventuelly will reach the top.

This was the case last sunday when I found (not to my surprise though) that #1452 ran worse after cleaning the throttle-housing, and when I found that the left CSV leaked internally. I was a bit depressed at that point, because it was freezing outside,[xx(] I only have a garage for storing, not for working. But it was one more difficult job done, and a possible source for the rich-running found, so progress after all! [:)]

Anyhow, the very knowledgable people here keep me on the straight and narrow, and their (and yours of course) expertise reminds me that if people made it (the 6.3 that is) then other people can mend it! [;)]

Hi Oliver,

Hi Gunter,
some years ago I was in Brussels from time to time handling business matters...
What I found amazing most (besides excellent gastronomy) was the variety of beer types that were offered around, from cherry to other "exceptional flavours". Wasnt there even one with a cinnamon taste?[:p]Hm, too long ago.
A friend of mine is a member of the Europ.parliament, he is ALWAYS happy when he comes back on weekends and enjoys the local beers here around all brewed in accordance with the German (Bavarian) Reinheitsgebot from 1516!![^].
I am really looking forward to meeting you next year!![8D]Dont forget to bring your beer with you.

Hi Oliver,

Because you made the effort to send me the hoses, I'm going to do something for you too!

1. As of wednesday, I didn't recieve your package, but I am patient.
2. When we meet in the spring of 2011 you are in for a treat; instead of a case of Westmalle Trappist beer, I'm going to make a selection of the best beers Belgium has to offer. I'm thinking of;
Westmalle Trappist
Sint Bernardus 12° (Heavenly beer, but two or three of them and you will be quite drunk)
Chimay Bleue
Orval
Leffe Blond
As to the "Reinheitsgebot" 2 years ago, I went with some friends to Stuttgart, and visited the Mercedes Museum. Regarding the German beer, well, suffice to say I was happy to return to Belgium after the mother of all headaches [:D][:D][:D]

A bit off topic, but IMHO a true car-lover should know a good beer as well [^]

900271 038025D = 38mm water hose

Hi Art, Oliver and others,

I recieved Olivers package, And WOW, he shipped me a large box FULL of different hoses, water-hoses, air-hoses, high-pressure hoses and what not. And all that as an early christmas-present. [:D][:D][:D]

I'm now taking stock as to the state of all the hoses I can make out, and I can use the spares Oliver sent me.

I guess that if I had to buy them all seperately, I would be looking at a few hundred euro's, so Oliver is going to get very drunk from all the different Belgian strong beers I'm going to present him come next spring! [}:)]

Art, I won't be coming to Australia any time soon, but you deserve it too, for your work, and your patience with me. THANX!

I have # 353 built in Dec 1968. I altered the left hose and used it for the right. Not Kosher for a restoration I suppose but it worked well and was a factory part. I know there were different hoses for different years.

In the parts book it states that from chassis 000151 the right side heater hose from the engine to the heater case connection is part number 109-831-02-94, while the left side is 109-831-03-94. While yours is an early car, it's not early enough to utilize the early hose (up to chassis 000151) which uses two of the 109-831-03-94)

As it turn out, the hose you need, part number 109-83-02-94, is no longer available. However, I believe that the hose a 4.5 or 3.5 uses will suffice, part number 109-834-05-94, which is still available.

Here are pictures of the heater hoses. Left side hose is 1098340394 which now subs to 3135060435 and is readily available. Right side hose is the NLA 1098340294. I tried twisting the 0435 hose 90 degrees and it appears it would work perhaps having to trim off a bit. It would be nice to see if the 1098340594 hose mentioned by Aaron would be a better fit. Can't find a picture of that one.

Aaron, the reason I asked you to send an image and reconfirm the part number was because
a) I can not find the part number you provided
b) When I sent the part number to Classic Center, Tom corrected it and showed me a hose with 109-831-05-94
c) The hose being sent is an L shape. With part number not matching with the one you listed an image would help me compare the hoses

Ok here goes. The hose sent by classic center is a bit short so does not work. I had ordered a hose from ECS tuning
Link: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-elaplast-parts/heater-hose/2108322794~ela/

This hose has an ID 1mm (16.6mm) smaller than the one I received from Classic Cente (17.4mm) but has the correct bends to fit like original. You will have to cut some unwanted bends to take out what you want. The best part is this is for MB so is almost original fit.

I'm very sorry for the confusion....in my original post I typed the wrong part number. The number Tom gave you is correct. I simply had fat fingers for some reason. I'm rather surprised that the 3.5/4.5 hose didn't work, as I've used that hose on 6.3 cars on many occasions. Regardless, it seems that you've found a hose off of a W210 car that will work just the same, and I'm very happy for you! :)

Hello.

I just successfully replaced many old hoses on the engine including two NLAs. I have not used OEM hoses sold per meter as thy are overpriced and you only need a small portion of it.

1) For NLA A1098310294 right side heater hose I successfully used part of ORIGINAL IMPERIUM 227435 aka HYUNDAI 973210X300. For the left side I suggest using original MB.

3) N900271018036 18mm ID hoses replaced by parts of MEYLE 019 500 0475 (22mm OD = better to fit to cramped places like next to injectors under intake manifold) or ORIGINAL IMPERIUM 2507/C (24mm OD - more robust, I used that for all water connections and to connect injection pump air to air filter box)
4) N900271032008 32mm ID hoses replaced by parts ORIGINAL IMPERIUM 5508
5) N900271038025 38mm ID hoses replaced by parts ORIGINAL IMPERIUM 5510
6) N900271042012 42mm ID hose replaced by part of FEBI 100353
7) Scavenger pipe to throttle body A1279970382 replaced by cut out of VAICO V30-0667 aka A1110181082

8) To replace NLA  A0089973182 you may use part of A0079977782. I managed to get NOS A0089973182 but A0079977782 was used on my car by previous owner.
