Engine overhaul on 4873

delivery in style.

That sedan is rated for the load? Nice.

Luckily the gear box shop is not that far away.

it is fixable at least. -CTH
I had the gearbox overhalued at the same time as the engine was overhauled.

Sooo, got the engine in, fired it up, topped up the gearbox fluid. And the ......thing only goes in reverse.

NOTHING happens in forward gears.
At higher revs it pulls the car slowly forwards.
I was not a very happy person this day.

It looks so clean!  And so does the shop.
Well Done!
So I got the engine back and it looks beautiful.

Earlier I tried to get a hold of 9:1 pistons to install, but this turned out to be a euro engine.

I know this is supposed to be a shoehorn fit, but I needed a crowbar to get it in there,

on the way off it won't matter much, because you're going to replace that seal before reassembly. -CTH
Thank you Charles.

Did I "eff" something up when I pulled it straight off during disassembly?

PS. Guess what kind off pistons were already in my engine

After you've replaced the front seal on the transmission, point the transmission skyward. Have the fluid coupler descend straight down.

When I get the engine back I will need to mate it with the gearbox and converter again.

What is the best way to to this?

Can I damage something in the converter when installing it on he shaft?
I seem to remember there is a possibility to create an oilleak there?

Got some pictures from Worle who is doing the engine.

As the engine is out I found some areas that needed a little attention

Some time later...

I believe that is a USA thing.  One of the Americans will have to confirm.

There is a plastic line going into the sump. Seems like it follows the fuel line. Is it tank ventilation?

Not great pictures, but...... It is a mess.

Seems like the motormounts needs renewal. The exhaust manifold is resting on the steering.

it's easier to pull them as a pair and separate them after.
No matter what approach you take, step 1 is to disconnect the battery. He's cut down on the engine fires.
Also, while the engine is out, you'll be looking at the engine mounts, sub frame mounts, fuel lines and a bunch of other parts that easy to reach while the engine is out.

You can do it two ways.
  • Remove the radiator & hood and pull the engine+trans with a cherry picker.
  • Put the car on jack stands, disconnect the brake lines, air suspension lines, steering, and then lower the axle, engine+trans down and pull it out from below the car.
I never choose the 2nd option because I pull engines in the driveway rather than on a shop floor. I don't have a good means of rolling the engine or getting the car high enough. But if you can swing that, do that.

Most people forget the ground strap by the starter to the body and wonder why they can't lift the engine.  The procedure to follow is in the book, tersely, but it's all there.

The engine+trans combo is heavy. The cherry picker can be knocked over when you have it holding the engine up high. Keep the arm as short as you can when you can. Keep it as low to the ground as you can, when you can.  While pulling the engine out from the engine bay, you will be able to do neither. Take it easy, have an assistant to help spot issues and cover the fenders and radiator support to protect the paint.

Hi guys.
I have had 4873 for 9 years now, and never gotten the engine to perform correctly.
Also water is disappearing into the engine and oil is appearing outside the engine.

I have now decided it is time to throw some money at it to get it working.
I contacted http://www.woerle-fahrzeugtechnik.com/ and was thinking of pulling the engine, box it up and send it there.
Not exactly cheap or close by, but at least they answered my emails.

I was hoping to get the gearbox done locally.

Question:
Is it easier to remove the gearbox prior to lifting out the engine?
Are there any tricks I should know about?
Except for using:
