it's easier to pull them as a pair and separate them after.
No matter what approach you take, step 1 is to disconnect the battery. He's cut down on the engine fires.
Also, while the engine is out, you'll be looking at the engine mounts, sub frame mounts, fuel lines and a bunch of other parts that easy to reach while the engine is out.
You can do it two ways.
- Remove the radiator & hood and pull the engine+trans with a cherry picker.
- Put the car on jack stands, disconnect the brake lines, air suspension lines, steering, and then lower the axle, engine+trans down and pull it out from below the car.
I never choose the 2nd option because I pull engines in the driveway rather than on a shop floor. I don't have a good means of rolling the engine or getting the car high enough. But if you can swing that, do that.
Most people forget the ground strap by the starter to the body and wonder why they can't lift the engine. The procedure to follow is in the book, tersely, but it's all there.
The engine+trans combo is heavy. The cherry picker can be knocked over when you have it holding the engine up high. Keep the arm as short as you can when you can. Keep it as low to the ground as you can, when you can. While pulling the engine out from the engine bay, you will be able to do neither. Take it easy, have an assistant to help spot issues and cover the fenders and radiator support to protect the paint.
