Craig,

My hat shelf was dirty and discolored. I took it to an auto upholstery specialist, and he cleaned the bad dirt, and then dyed the material back to the original color. It looks, for all intent and purpose, new.

You might check into having that done.

Best Regards,
Jim

the original first aid kit flap edges were heat sealed, but any upholstery shop can sew a vinyl binding around it.

I am planning to do again the parcel shelf. I have relined it myself with a beige fabric but now I have the velours available of which the headrests were made of. I understood the shelf fabric is originally closer to the carpet than the seat velours but I guess it is not so bad to use the seat velours there?

But how to do the first aid flap edge trim? Any ideas or suggestions? I am willing to take the shelf to a upholstery specialist who refurbished my headrests.

My car was originally with mushroom leather but I changed the seats to velours one.

I just recently replaced the Decking material (Palomino color) on 4155 with velour carpet obtained from Buds Benz in Georgia (budsbenz.com). This is actually a carpet material and is slightly thicker and less flexible than the original stuff which was thoroughly glued to the backer board and was completely destroyed in some places upon removal. The big problem was the first aid flap which many upholstery shops will simply not mess with and will try to talk you into covering up. Carpet binding , if you can find the right color would be best but we ended up dying some corduroy ,cutting it on the bias and stitching it with Janes old Bernina. Contact cement worked just fine on the original backer board. The original material is also used on the upper dash panels (under the wood) if you can find it, and it would be easier to manipulate. Anyway it did not turn out too bad and it sure beats that hot pressed plastic crap Mercedes used on the originals. Alpine makes some front speakers but some surgery is required to slightly enlarge the speaker wells. If you are very careful you may be able to remove the original velour and dye it in your girl friends washing machine ( I tried the with some of the remnants and it really works. Good Luck Dan PS Factory assembled deck units are not available and in 1992 the were $260 Plus.

You are correct. Stu Hammel does have an OEM fabric supplier source in Germany. You may have better luck finding him on the 6.3 message board.

Mine looked terrible - someone had steam cleaned it to get rid of minor marks, which sucked the dark brown colour out of the surface of the cheap board used for the shelf (sorry, hat rack is the correct expression I believe). It also made the shelf warp.
I made a replacement from a sheet of wood and covered it in leather. The first aid cut out is difficult to edge, and I haven't got around to that yet. But on the other hand, in leather there's just a thin cut line, hard to see anyway. And I took the opportunity to add speaker mounts which raise the speaker slightly, allowing a larger speaker to be used. Wish I could do that in the front.
I had the same problem but i had my tame auto trimmer source a german carpet as near as damn match to the floor carpet and he re covered the shelf inc cut out for the first aid kit. came up very well but getting the parcel shelf in and out is a bit of fun.
Anyone know a source for NOS rear parcel shelf fabric ? Mine is water stained due presumably to a leaking rear window seal at some stage, so it would be good to replace it. It would be difficult to make one I think because of the first aid kit cut-out. I believe the colour of mine is "Pergament".
